GERMAN PENN IMMIGRANTS CHEST, SIGNED, DATED, PAINTED IN PA GERMAN DUTCH MOTIF

This is a magnificent immigrants chest, the folk art painting on this is excellent. As immigrants came to America, they painted the chests and signed and some put the date of their journey. This one is dated 1901. We believe the chest itself is much earlier, as you can see by the early wrought strap hinges. There is a till box inside also. The original lock is there and with the original key!!! The painting on this is exquisite, the camera made it a tad bluer than it really is, but pretty accurate. In researching my American Folk Art book, I found the paintings like the one on this chest illustrated on another chest, saying how much this style depicted the German Pa Dutch influence in America. My daughter, who majors in German, said the saying on the front,as much as she can make out, is a prayer for a safe journey. This is decorated in the Pa Dutch German motif and was found in Lancaster, Pa. This is also goes under the catagory of FOLK ART! This is in excellent condition and is just the right size...measuring 30" w x 17' deep x 15' high. SOLD
